Five Mobility Scooter

Two Men in Wheelchairs for Weston Mobility

It’s hard to believe that the summer is almost over. As August rolls into September, we can expect the nights to get shorter and the temperature to get colder. Fast-forward a month or two after that and we can expect to once again see icy conditions on our roads and pavements.

A mobility scooter from our mobility shop in Weston Super Mare makes for a great way to remain independent, but during inclement weather, the conditions aren’t always ideal for travelling. However, with these simple tips, you should be able to get the most out of your mobility scooter during the autumn/winter months.

1) Always fully charge your mobility scooter

Ensure that your mobility scooter is fully charged before you use it. This applies every time you intend to use it, even if you’re just going on a short trip to the local shop. If you only partially charge the battery before embarking on a journey, you run the risk of reducing the performance of the battery over time, and eventually, it will become unusable.

2) Check your tyres

In icy or slippery conditions, it’s important to ensure your tyres aren’t showing signs of wear and tear. Try to make a habit of doing this at least once a month. If the pressure is low, you can pump your tyres up (for free, in most instances) at a local petrol station.

3) Keep your scooter sheltered

Ideally, you should keep your mobility scooter in your house, shed or garage. This will prevent components from rusting. It will also preserve battery performance (cold weather can affect battery capability).

4) Cover your scooter’s control panel

Most mobility scooters feature electrical components. Try to use a protective cover to shield the control panel during rainy weather, to avoid any potential damage.

5) Check your lights

It’s important to have a working headlight on your mobility scooter so that other people are aware of your presence. In addition to this, you may want to consider wearing a hi-visibility jacket – particularly when the clocks “go back” and the nights get darker.

With the correct precautions in place, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the independence a mobility scooter brings regardless of the weather.
